Braintree Lions Club has already used some of the £3,294 raised from a Santa Claus sleigh touring the town at Christmas to benefit people in the area.

Media and public relations officer Tom Dix said a Christmas dinner and social was provided for elderly people; pantomime tickets and presents were provided for women and children at the Braintree Refuge and 120 selection boxes were provided for the social services department to distribute to children.

Another £300 was collected by the sleigh outside Tesco's store in the Market Place to benefit the store's charity for the year, Cystic Fibrosis.

Mr Dix said: "Our next fund-raising venture for charitable purposes will be an auction of furniture, household items and tools, to be held on Saturday February 1 at 10am.

"Catalogue availability and viewing between 6.30pm and 8.30pm the previous day.

"The venue is the Institute in the Causeway, just behind Argos.

"Should anyone wish to donate an item they can ring 01376 554870 for free collection in the Braintree area."
