A woman was taken to hospital, suffering from back and neck injuries after a road collision.
Firefighters were called to the scene at Leinster Road, Laindon.
A Citroen saloon had collided with a white Transit van and the passenger of the Citroen became trapped.
Fire fighters took about 40 minutes to cut the roof of the vehicle off and then paramedics used a spine board to transport the casualty to the ambulance and then to Basildon hospital.
