Boatbuilding is set to return to Canvey after a man saw his life-long dream come true by starting up his own marine business.

Terry Croarkin started up South East Marine, his own boatbuilding company, three months ago and is set to move into the former Prout factory, Point Road, Canvey, as he already needs to expand.

The 55-year old, who worked for Prout Catamarans on the island until it closed in January last year, is moving to the 6,000 square-foot factory from his workshop in Great Wakering.

He said: "Since we set up the business we have been inundated with orders but we do not have enough room where we are in Great Wakering.

"I was really pleased that we were able to take over the lease of the original Prout factory as it is the perfect size and location for us. Ever since the Prout Factory closed last year there has been no boatbuilding on Canvey which is a real shame as there are a lot of experienced labourers living there."

Mr Croarkin, who runs the business with his son Sean and another ex-Prout employee, said he was hoping to take on more employees once he has settled into the new premises.

The business will centre on building small boats around 16ft to 27ft, costing between £5,000 to £35,000. They will be sold to agents across Europe.
