Southend United goalkeeper Danny Gay has a double agenda at FA Cup heroes Shrewsbury Town tomorrow -- to lift the pressure off Blues chief Rob Newman and cement his place in the first team.

The 20-year-old made his first start of the season at Carlisle last weekend, deputising for thigh injury victim Darryl Flahavan, who had been ever-present.

And even though the former Norwich City youngster couldn't prevent Blues slipping to a 1-0 defeat, he made a big impression with some fine saves at Brunton Park.

"I'm feeling confident and I hope we can go to Shrewsbury and get the victory we need for the team and manager," said Gay.

"We know our results haven't been great recently and unfortunately for the gaffer he gets judged on the team's performances.

"But nothing would please the players more than to get three points at Gay Meadow and ease the pressure he has been under this week.

"And for me personally I would like to do my bit for the boss by going there and keeping a clean sheet.

"I really feel this is my big chance to cement my place in the team as Southend's number one keeper.

"Darryl Flahavan is one of the best goalies in the lower divisions and I don't get too many chances to prove my worth.

"But he is out for more than a month and I know I'm never going to get a better run of games in the side."

Blues are still without Kevin Maher, who completes a two game ban, but fellow midfielder Stuart Thurgood returns from suspension.
