Steve McGavin will use this weekend to map out the next stage of his footballing career.
The former Colchester United star is a free agent after his contract as player-boss of Harwich and Parkeston was terminated by 'mutual consent' last week.
Ryman League premier division side Braintree Town are fighting Jewson League teams AFC Sudbury and Stanway Rovers for the 33-year-old's signature, but McGavin told the Evening Gazette: "I've still got to speak to the clubs again but I will be making a decision over the weekend."
McGavin is believed to be favouring a move back to Suffolk.
He was a hero at Sudbury Town in the late-1980s before being snapped up by the U's and he has been in contact with AFC Sudbury assistant manager Michael Cheetham, who also played for Colchester.
An incentive for McGavin is that Sudbury are in the later stages of the FA Vase and are favourites for the competition.
