An £80,000 appeal to help make Chelmsford more accessible to people with mobility problems has reached its target just 18 months after it was launched.
The Meadows Shop-mobility appeal, adopted for support by the Essex Chronicle over the past year, has achieved its aim of raising enough money for eight top quality scooters and to create a base for them at the Meadows centre.
An allocation of £50,000 for the capital cost of the scheme, announced this week by Essex County Council, took the appeal to its target.
Now plans are afoot to convert a store room in the centre's multi-storey car park into a base.
The scooters will be available for people with mobility problems to use in the shopping centre and surrounding area.
