An elderly man who thought he was doing a young couple a favour became the target of a new breed of bogus callers.
The 90-year-old man, of Pennsylvania Lane, Tiptree, discovered the man and woman had let themselves into his home and then asked him to change a £10 note.
But when the man went to get his wallet to get the change, it was snatched by the woman and the pair ran off.
Det Sgt Roger Napier, of Colchester police, said this type of theft was just another tactic used by bogus callers.
"Be very wary of people who come to your door and ask for change, it is usually just so they can find out where you keep your money."
Both the man and woman were in their late teens and the man was wearing a dark woolly hat and dark coat while the woman was wearing dark clothes.
