A woman and her baby son escaped injury when their car burst into flames after an accident in icy conditions between High Easter and Good Easter.
Kim Perry, of Gepps Close, High Easter, was driving with one-year-old Jenson in the car when the accident happened.
It is understood that the vehicle skidded after avoiding a car involved in another accident, mounted the verge and became impaled on a pole projecting from a crash barrier.
"We were both OK but, as we walked away from the car, it burst into flames," she said.
Essex County Council said: "The road was not gritted as it did not meet the criteria, but it has been gritted now and warning signs have been put up.
"We will also be investigating the problem of spring water coming on to the road."
