A longer working day at a Witham school has proved so successful it may be widened to include more year groups from September.

The enrichment "hour" at The John Bramston School in Spinks Lane was introduced for year seven and eight pupils in September.

Pupils have to take part but can choose which activities they get involved in, and can do different things on different days.

The options include football, rugby, dance and drama, as well as book and computer clubs and supervised homework sessions.

Deputy headteacher Mike Gee said: "It's been very successful and it's certainly continuing. What we would like to do in the next few months is look at it in more detail.

"It's compulsory for two year groups at the moment - that's just over 450 students - and the plan will be to extend that to three year groups in September and then add one year group every year until the whole school is involved."

While other years go home at 3.15pm, those who do the enrichment "hour" remain at school until 3.55pm.
