Nearly two people a week are looking at setting up new neighbourhood watch groups in Colchester.
Dozens of new neighbourhood watch groups got up and running in 2002 and many more look like being set up this year.
The current number stands at well above 400 groups.
Creating new groups is a key part of Colchester Neighbourhood Watch's programme and is included in the town's crime and disorder reduction partnership.
The town's watch association is aiming to get 200 new groups up and running during the next few years.
Carole Dennis, the organisation's Colchester co-ordinator, said she no longer had to target areas because interested people were constantly coming forward.
She said: "We are approached by at least two new people each week wishing to get neighbourhood watches up and running in their areas."
