A man who was assaulted in Witham has been left blind in one eye.
The Witham man, in his 30s, was injured in the area of the White Hart pub, Newland Street, on New Year's Eve.
He was taken to hospital with severe head and facial injuries and there were fears then that he may lose the sight in one eye.
He was discharged from Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, on Sunday.
Investigating police officer Det Con Matt Bradford confirmed: "He has lost the sight out of his eye.
"It is too early to say what percentage of sight he may retain or lose in the other eye."
Three people were arrested in connection with the attack and released on police bail.
