A Co-op store could be built next door to another Co-op shop.
Colchester and East Essex Co-Operative Society has submitted a planning application to Colchester Council seeking permission to build a new store in the car park of its existing store in Chapel Road, West Bergholt.
The Co-op bought the building, previously a family butchers, three years ago.
A spokeswoman for the society said the new store would be "bigger and better" and allow the store to offer a wider range of products and services.
"What we want to do is build the store on the car park space next to the store that is already there."
