People with learning difficulties in Southend could soon have their own "parliament" to make sure their interests are represented in the life of the town.
The decision to set up the forum was made at a conference for people with a learning difficulty which was held by charity Mencap and Southend Council.
The purpose of the conference was to ensure all the people in Southend with a learning difficulty had a chance to speak up for themselves and be represented at a high level to influence decisions made in the town.
It also set out to gauge the level of interest in setting up a Parliament of People with a Learning Disability.
Susan Douglas, of Mencap, said: "People with a learning disability who attended the conference voted overwhelmingly to set up the parliament,
"It will ensure their voice is heard when plans are made public which affect life in Southend."
