Campaigners who have been calling for better road safety measures in residential streets around Southend town centre look set to have won their battle.
There have been major concerns about traffic speed and parking problems in areas around the existing 20mph zone in the Milton Conservation Area.
On Thursday, the council traffic and parking committee will be asked to extend the lower speed limit to other areas, stretching from the High Street to Milton Road at Westcliff.
In a report to the committee, technical services director David Watts is asking for approval to go out for public consultation to include a number of other roads.
Included in the new 20mph zone, which would be backed by traffic calming measures, are Avenue Terrace, St Vincent's Road, Gordon Road, College Way, Napier Avenue, Elmer Avenue, Gordon Place and part of Queen's Road.
Mr Watts said: "The extended 20mph zone will provide environmental benefits to residents in these roads by discouraging through traffic. Development of this proposal will require collation of speed and traffic flow data and consultation with residnets in affected areas."
