Youngsters in Castle Point were celebrating today after a £125,000 youth centre and skatepark was given the go-ahead.
Smiles filled the public gallery at council headquarters last night when members of the charity Legacy XS heard councillors unite to support the centre.
The centre and skatepark, which will cover about a quarter-of-an-acre, will be built on South Benfleet playing fields, behind Richmond Hall, in High Road, Benfleet.
The scheme has earned the backing of those desperate to get bored youngsters off the streets of Castle Point and sparked the launch of the Evening Echo's Beat The Boredom campaign.
Outside the full council meeting, in Kiln Road, Thundersley, Legacy XS project leader Peter Hillman spoke of his joy.
The youth worker said: "We are all absolutely delighted the members have given us their backing and we look forward to working in partnership with the council."
