Car enthusiast Barry Allix was counting the cost today after thieves slashed the roof of his prized convertible to steal a second hand stereo.
The thieves caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage to the soft top of his classic, Mark One Volkswagen Golf, but only got away with the £40 stereo. Mr Allix, 29, of Kings Road, Chalkwell, got up for work on Friday morning and discovered the damage to his car and had to take the day off work to get it sorted out.

He said: "I didn't expect this kind of thing to happen in Chalkwell. If they'd just smashed the window I wouldn't have been so bothered.
"But it will cost so much to replace the roof that I'm going to have to try to fix it myself. I'm furious some little scallywag has done this."
