A 26-year-old from Colchester was today fighting for his life after an accident in West Mersea.
The man suffered serious head and back injuries after his Vauxhall Astra was in a head-on collision with a Ford Escort at about 11.45pm on Saturday in Colchester Road.
Emergency services were called and the road was blocked off.
Fire crews from Mersea and Colchester went to the scene, as cutting equipment was needed to free the man from his car. His 24-year-old female passenger suffered minor head and leg injuries.
The male and female occupants of the Ford car suffered whiplash.
The Astra driver was taken to Colchester General Hospital and later transferred to Oldchurch Hospital, Romford, for specialist treatment.
His condition was today described as critical.
