Vandals hacked away at a Colchester sports pavilion, causing thousands of pounds of damage.
Taxpayers will end up footing the bill for the "mindless" attack on the council-owned changing rooms on Shrub End Sports Ground in Boadicea Way.
Windows were smashed and the roof was damaged but the vandals failed to get into the building.
Jan Britton, Colchester Council parks and recreation manager, said: "It looks like somebody had a bit of a go at the building over the Christmas holiday.
"Somebody has found their way on to the roof and did a significant amount of damage.
"It's pretty mindless and causes us all sorts of difficulties. It's not as though anything of great value was in the building."
Anyone with information about the vandalism should call Colchester police on 01206 762212.
