The future of memorial plaques placed on wards and the chapel of Orsett Hospital is being discussed.

The demolition of part of the hospital means that the plaques -- recognising people's contributions to the work of the hospital -- are, at the moment, being stored by the Basildon and Thurrock Hospitals NHS Trust.

The trust says it intends to place them in suitable areas of the redeveloped hospital, possibly in the entrance, but some people have said they would rather the plaques from the chapel are placed in a religious setting.

The suggestion is being backed by the Orsett Parochial Church Council, which hopes to be allowed to place them in St Giles' Church in the village.

Rector, the Rev Vanessa Cato, said it was rare for new memorial plaques to be allowed into churches, but the "PCC feels this is a special case"

Anybody who would like to discuss the placing of plaques from the chapel in the church should contact the rector on 01375 891254 before the end of January.
