A car window was smashed in Gilbert Way, Braintree, in what police believe may have been an attempt to hotwire the car.
Nothing was stolen from the Ford Sierra but the owner of the car found a baseball bat lying on the rear seat and a craft knife under the car.
It happened last night. Braintree police said two suspects were seen near the car.
Both were described as teenage boys, aged 14 to 15 years old.
One wore a cream, padded jacket.
The other wore a black, padded jacket with Nike written across the back.
He also wore a dark-coloured baseball cap.
A police spokesman said: "It appears there had been an attempt to hotwire it."
Nothing was stolen.
Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who recognises the descriptions to contact PC James Stirland at Braintree police on 01376 551312
