Fire crews worked through the night as rain flooded a Bowers Gifford road and lapped at front doors.
Officers told how water was just inches from entering homes in Pound Lane as they struggled to pump it into nearby dykes.
Firefighter John Adams, of Hadleigh fire station, said: "It was fairly severe flooding on both sides of road. The fields had become so water-logged that water was just pouring into the road. It was inches from entering people's homes."
Firefighters were called to Pound Lane at 11am yesterday. Crews spent eight hours battling with the water pouring into the road, pumping it into the dykes.
Mr Adams said: "It was fairly bad and if we get more rain over the next day or so it will get worse."
