Burglars stole phone cards, worth £900, and tried to break into a cash machine at a Braintree petrol station.
The BP petrol station shop in Rayne Road, Braintree, was closed on New Year's Eve, when burglars forced open a back door after 5pm.
The station, which is normally open 24hours, reopened again today at 6.30am.
The forecourt manager said damage was caused to the cash machine.
She said no money was taken, but some phone cards were taken and some cigarettes.
Police are searching for a man who stole £400 worth of phone cards from a Chelmsford convenience store.
The man walked into Alldays and got into the staff only area of the Moulsham Street shop just after noon on Boxing Day.
He was described as 5ft 4ins tall, in his 20s and of chubby build with a shaved head and was wearing a checked shirt, cream jumper and jacket
