A man might lose his sight in one eye after he was assaulted near a Witham pub.
The Witham man was attacked just after 11.30pm on New Year's Eve in the area surrounding the White Hart pub in Newland Street
He was found unconscious by police and several members of the public and was taken to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, with severe head and facial injuries.
Investigating officer Det Con Matt Bradford, said: "As yet we are unsure as to how and exactly where this man sustained these injuries but believe he was attacked and this has left him in a relatively delicate condition in hospital.
"We would like to speak with New Year's revellers who may have seen anything untoward or suspicious in the vicinity of the pub and will certainly be able to assist with our inquiries."
Det Con Barry Johnson today said the man's condition had not changed.
Mr Johnson said the man had had one operation, and might have another today.
A police spokesman said yesterday the man was recovering in hospital and may lose the sight of an eye.
