A church hall which has stood for almost 100 years could soon be replaced with a new building as part of a project to improve facilities.
Clacton's Pier Avenue Baptist Church is planning to replace the youth hall, behind the main church building, with a new complex in three phases.
The hall was first built in 1908 and was made of tin tabernacle.
In 1928, when the present church was built, the tin hall was removed and converted into a temporary youth hall, which is still in use today.
It is made of corrugated iron, has no insulation and is in poor repair and the church wants to replace it with a new complex.
Rev Stephen Biddall said it was hoped to start phase one of the project, which would involve demolishing the iron hall and replacing it with a modern construction, in 2003.
Phases two and three of the project will involve refurbishing the existing kitchens and toilets and linking all sections of the complex with a glass atrium roof.
Mr Biddall said there were a number of successful youth organisations which met in the hall, including the Girl's Brigade, and the new hall would make a big difference.
