A Canvey road was today branded "disgusting" as dirt caused by building work spilled out into the street.
The Thorney Bay development has been under way for some time but is still causing controversy among residents.
A stretch of the Thorney Bay Road between Craven Avenue and Southwick Road is covered in dirt from the development site next to the road, it was claimed today.
Road-sweeping machines were operating on the road - but were failing to clean away all the debris, according to drivers in the street.
Lorraine Davies, of Matlock Road, Canvey, claims her windscreen was smashed by some of the debris which included gravel and dirt across the road.
She said: "I am appalled that this situation has been allowed to continue for so long."
The development is being built by Wilson Homes. A spokesperson for the company said: "We have our roads cleaned regularly."
