More new homes are set to be built in Magdalen Street, Colchester.
Higgins Homes has acquired land on which is a large detached house and a disused former filling station.
The developer, based in Loughton, near Epping, plans to build one and two bedroom apartments and two and three bedroom houses.
It will add to the 167-home development already in place behind Magdalen Street.
Demolition company North East Demolition began taking down the filling station yesterday
Sean Harvey, managing director of North East Demolition, said: "Flats are going on it as part of the Higgins development behind it.
He said demolition of the filling station would take a week and the crew would return to demolish the house in two weeks.
Denise Mcgee, landlady of the nearby Beerhouse pub, said: "It should be a good thing. New flats will hopefully mean more customers."
