Flames which ripped through the building flared 40ft into the night sky and could be seen for miles around as residents were warned to close their windows because of thick, choking smoke.
Firefighters had problems getting their fire engines close to Pembury Hall in Clayburn Circle due to the smoke after being alerted to the blaze by dozens of 999 calls.
As fire crews arrived at the scene, windows blew out and splintered into thousands of fragments. Ricky Adams, sub officer at Basildon fire station, said: "When we arrived the smoke was so thick we could hardly see where we were going.
"People living up to two miles around had to shut their windows because of the smoke. It was terrible."
Arson is suspected and an investigation was due to be carried out today.
