Rosemary deBoise had watched as the land around St Katherine's Church cemetery, in Canvey Road, Canvey, became overgrown and untidy.
The secretary of the Canvey Heritage Centre, which sits next to the church, said: "The grass in the cemetery was always cut regularly but a lot of the bushes had become overgrown and spread all over the graves making it look very messy."
However, recently Mrs deBoise has seen a transformation in the appearance of the cemetery.
She said: "It looks wonderful. All the bushes have been chopped down and it is so tidy you can see right across the cemetery. It must have taken a lot of work. I think someone was acting beyond the call of duty."
