Southend United's loan winger Tony Scully revealed today he was still gobsmacked by his surprise switch to the seaside.

The 26-year-old made the move from Blues' Third Division rivals Cambridge United late on Friday, after Shrimpers chief Rob Newman had initially admitted defeat in recruiting a new face before the weekend.

Cambridge were also believed to want Southend defender Phil Whelan to join them at the Abbey Stadium, but that part of the deal broke down.

And Scully said today he was still shocked to be part of the Roots Hall set-up for the next four weeks.

"I got a phone-call right out of nowhere from my manager telling me I was going to Southend, which was something I never saw coming," said the Dubliner.

"He told me I wouldn't be starting Cambridge's match with Swansea at the Abbey on Saturday, so I was more than happy to make the move.

"Things are also very tight financially at Cambridge and I think that is another reason why they wanted me to go.

"But I'm pleased to be at Southend and it was nice to play 90 minutes against Wrexham at the weekend, even though it was disappointing to lose 1-0."
