A new controlled parking zone may be introduced within a radius of up to two miles around Witham railway station.
Witham Town Council's planning committee last night voted to investigate the possibility after complaints from residents that commuters, prevented from parking their cars by parking restrictions in certain streets, were merely driving to other streets without restrictions to leave their cars.
The two main options are residents parking permits and one hour every weekday when street parking is banned.
Paul Heath (Lab, North Ward), Town council leader, said: "Perhaps the time has come to look at all roads within one and a half to two miles of the station and ask Essex County Council to look at one-hour bans on all the roads it may affect."
Barry Fleet (Lib Dem, Central Ward) said on roads nearer the town centre, residents-only parking rather than one-hour bans might be more appropriate.
Essex County Council highways officer Bob Wiltshire, who was at the meeting, agreed to look at the possibility of a controlled parking zone across central Witham.
