Firefighters were called out after around 60 wooden pallets caught fire in a yard in Basildon's Burnt Mills industrial estate.
The blaze at the Recycle Pallet Company, in Josselin Road, took hold after old pallets were set alight in a skip and the flames spread to other pallets nearby.
Staff used forklift trucks to move the burning piles away from the building.
Colin Lidbury, station officer at Basildon fire station, said: "The company did very well to get all the stacks of pallets moved. It meant the fire could not spread to any of the buildings."
