A new Thames crossing could be an environmental disaster without new flood defences, leading councillor Ray Howard warned today.
Southend councillors were to be urged in a meeting tonight to back a new road and rail crossing over the estuary.
It has not been spelled out where the crossing would be, but it is known a crossing from Canvey to Kent is envisaged as part of the massive Thames Gateway regeneration project.
