Campaigning pensioners have won the first round in their fight against increased charges for swimming at council pools.
The proposals at Clacton Leisure Centre and Walton Swimming Pool as part of a review of fees for leisure facilities prompted an outcry when they were announced.
Elderly swimmers claimed they were being discriminated against and three petitions, signed by more than 250 swimmers, calling for a review of the proposals were handed in.
Six-monthly cards for the Vista Road pool and the one at Walton were set to almost double, from £59 to £108, while a single session was set to increase, from £1.40 to £2.
But members of Tendring Council's policy watchdog overview and scrutiny committee last night backed a recommendation calling on the council's cabinet to introduce a £65 senior citizens' Aquacard for six months, with immediate effect.
Councillors also recommended the cabinet consider introducing a book of 12 tickets for £20 as a more affordable option.
