Mohammad Ali could be putting on an Essex sweater next summer after turning down the offer of a new contract with Derbyshire.
The east Midlands county have confirmed that Essex have written to them stating they intend to speak to the 27-year-old fast bowler, who last season captured 47 Championship wickets at an average of just over 36.
Those statistics suggest Ali is a little wayward at times, but he generates plenty of hostility, as confirmed when he broke Richard Clinton's wrist at Chelmsford in May.
It was widely thought Essex would target a top overseas paceman to strengthen the squad on its return to the First Division.
But there are concerns that current finances might not allow the considerable expenditure needed to attract a player of Test status.
The county are expected to announce a loss of well into six figures in the weeks ahead and have already axed Ilford's Valentine Park as a Festival venue in an attempt to cut costs.
