Kind-hearted pupils have clubbed together to help out their less fortunate foreign friends.

Students at Janet Duke Junior School, in Markhams Chase, Basildon, have filled shoe boxes full of essential provisions to be shipped to war-torn areas of Europe for the festive season.

The project is part of the Operation Christmas Child, being run by international charity, Samaritan's Purse.

Youngsters took in containers stuffed with essentials such as clothes, scarves, gloves, toothbrushes and sweets which will now be collected and sent to Ireland and eastern Europe.

A spokesman for Janet Duke said the pupils were keen to help their disaster-struck counterparts.
