Former squaddie Daryl Tompkins was left battered and bruised after an evening out in the town turned into a nightmare.
Three thugs attacked the 23-year-old as he walked along the High Street during the early hours with a female friend.

Despite already nursing a broken wrist, the suspects showed no mercy as he was punched to the ground and kicked in the body.
Police have branded the attack "vicious and cowardly" and have urged witnesses to contact them.
The incident happened outside TopShop when the victim and his friend were heading home after an evening at Bakers Bar.
Anyone with any information on the attack should call PC Ed Walker, at Southend police, on 01702 431212.
