A river crossing near Southend is to be controversially backed at a special meeting tomorrow.

Southend councillors are being urged to throw their weight behind plans for a new Lower Thames Crossing.

Members of the cabinet will be urged at a special meeting to back a report by technical services director David Watts.

He is recommending members back calls for a road and rail crossing nearer to Southend than the Dartford Tunnel. Mr Watts said: "The concept should be fully embraced as a real opportunity to improve the transport infrastructure and services in the region."
