Chelmsford's Melbourne district is being singled out for special attention in an all-out attack on burglary.

The area - identified by police as a problem zone - will be targeted with school and shopping centre visits, leaflet drops and high profile policing during a week long, countywide blitz launched today.

The third phase of Operation Relentless is timed to coincide with the onset of long winter evenings which offer thieves a better chance of breaking in to homes undetected.

Known burglars across Essex will be sent warning letters and police will check up on suspected criminals whose bail conditions keep them indoors after dark.

In the Chelmsford division, which includes Maldon, 20 extra police officers and support staff will leave headquarters desk jobs to take part in the initiative.

Chief Inspector Jed Stopher of Chelmsford police said: "Burglary is a problem everywhere and at this time of year we do have an increasing problem, particularly with the dark nights.

"Our analysis of trends tells us that Melbourne is the area where we have particular problems and we are trying to reassure people that we are doing our best to make Melbourne a better place to live.

"Crime prevention officers were set to meet the public at special "bobby in the lobby" events around the town, advising homeowners of simple precautions they could take to prevent them becoming a victim.
