A trial of latest plans for recycling and waste management is to start next week.
Colchester Council will give 58,000 homes the chance to take part in a trial of kerbside collections of green waste.
It is an extension of a scheme that has been running in West Mersea for two years and is the latest step in the council's bid to become the country's cleanest and greenest.
Householders taking part will be able to place up to three bags of green waste for collection on the same day as other recyclable materials, like paper, cardboard, glass and cans which are already collected. If successful, the service will be extended to all households in the borough late next year.
These extra green waste collections are aimed at helping the council reach its target of recycling 40 per cent of waste by 2004 and 60 per cent by 2007. It currently recycles more than 20 per cent.
The trial starts today and all homes included will receive a leaflet detailing the new service and what can and can't be collected. For more information call Colchester Council on 01206 282700.
