Police were today trying to find a motive for the murder of Barry Redsull.

The 27-year-old supermarket manager was stabbed repeatedly outside his home on the Woodgrange estate, Southend, where he lived with his widowed mother.

He left work at the Somerfield store, in Spa Road, Hockley, at 11.40pm on Thursday and caught a train from Hockley station to Southend Victoria.

Detectives believe he walked towards his home in Outing Close, Southend, off Kursaal Way, arriving there at 12.30am.

Neighbours heard the sound of raised voices and looked out of their windows to find Mr Redsull slumped on the ground.

An ambulance was called and Mr Redsull was taken to Southend Hospital, where he died despite a long battle by medical staff to save him.

Forensic pathologist Dr Mike Heath carried out a post mortem examination which showed the victim died of multiple stab wounds. Today, staff at Somerfield were mourning the death of their popular manager.

Spokeswoman Gemma Davies said: "Barry's death has come as a shock to all of us. He was a highly valued member of staff and got on with everybody at the Hockley store."

It is thought a knife with a six to eight-inch blade was used in the attack.

Call Essex Police on 01245 452208.

A man questioned by detectives has been released without charge.
