Essex Police today urged motorists to be vigilant after a woman had her Mercedes stolen by carjackers at Lakeside Shopping Centre.

The 48-year-old woman was locking her purple saloon in a loading bay close to the Warner Bros cinema when she was approached by two men from behind.

They then grabbed her, stole the car keys and drove off in the vehicle.

Police are appealing for help in the latest case.

The woman, who was uninjured in the attack, has told police the men were "dark skinned" and of "European" appearance, aged around 25.

One of the men was wearing a dark, shiny top.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "It's not a common crime but at the same time it is not unknown. Drivers and owners of high value cars need to be mindful they could be targets."

Anybody who saw the incident or who saw the men or who finds the car - registration number AV 51 ZFO - is asked to call police on 01375 391212.
