Children at a special needs school in Basildon were today praised for their bravery and calm evacuation process following a gas explosion.

Staff and 71 pupils at Elmbrook School, in Church Road, had to be evacuated after a gas system on the side of the school's swimming pool exploded.

The caretaker was turning the system off when there was a small explosion.

He was treated by paramedics for burns to his hands but there were no other reported injuries.

Basildon fire station commander Olly Holford said: "We sent two engines to the school and one crew entered in breathing apparatus.

"It was just a momentary explosion and the fire was out by the time we got there.

"Luckily, there were no serious injuries and everyone got out of the building safely."

The firefighters continued to check the school and turn off all of the gas while the children remained in demountable classrooms watching what was happening.

Deputy headteacher at the school Carole Clift said: "As soon as we smelled gas, we got all of the children out. We are very happy no one has been hurt and we are extremely proud of the staff and the children who were excellent."

There was no major damage caused by the explosion.
