Colchester lost 4-2 at Mansfield in Nationwide Division Two with striker Iyseden Christie scoring four times.
Christie headed the home side into the lead on 19 minutes before Joe Keith equalised on 24 minutes from a penalty.
But the Mansfield striker headed a second on 25 minutes and struck a near-post volley for his hat-trick on the half hour.
Mansfield keeper Kevin Pilkington made two good saves before Kevin Rapley made it 3-2 on 31 minutes.
The home side dominated the second half despite Jamie Clarke having to clear off the line from Bobby Bowry.
Christie raced away to add his fourth on 63 minutes.
With nine minutes remaining, Alan White was sent off after being shown a second yellow card for bringing down Christie.
There was more disappointment for Southend in Nationwide Division Three as they lost for the fourth successive time in the league and were fortunate not to lose by a greater margin than 1-0.
The Welsh team dominated the first half and missed a series of opportunities before Steve Thomas scored the winning goal.
Substitute Thomas pounced five minutes before the break, driving the ball home from close range after goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan had blocked a fierce shot from Andy Morrell.
The Shrimpers improved after the break and Shaun Pejic had to clear off the line from Barrington Belgrave.
The Southend striker also hit the post in stoppage time.
But Wrexham always looked the more composed outfit with Shaun Holmes and Lee Trundle both going close.
