A school which was forced to close after staff and pupils became sick due to a lighting fault was back open today.

Cressing Primary School, in Braintree Road, Cressing, decided to send pupils and staff home on Wednesday after they complained of having headaches and feeling sick.

The problem was down to a fault in the school's lighting system, which caused the lights to flicker on and off at different times to each other.

The fault developed before half-term but did not affect the school before the break because it was light enough to work by daylight.

But after two non-pupil days this week, pupils went back to school on Wednesday.

Headteacher Carol Leverett said: "When children came in on Wednesday, it was particularly bad light outside so we had to turn the lights on.

"Pupils and staff became nauseous and some had headaches.

"I contacted the Local Education Authority who agreed the best thing to do was to send everyone home and remain closed until the problem was fixed."

The school was back open today after an electrician had carried out repair work on the fault.
