He has graced television screens in thousands of homes in his quest for the perfect woman, but Mr Right is known by some in Colchester as the son of a former top soldier in the Garrison.

Lance Gerrard-Wright, 35, who starred in reality show Mr Right last night on ITV, is the son of Major General Dick Gerrard-Wright, who was based in Colchester briefly as commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment in 1970 and returned in 1980 as General Officer Commanding the Eastern District.

His son followed in his father's footsteps to pursue a career in the Army, which has included being a survival instructor at Sandhurst's Royal Military Academy.

In the show presented by Ulrika Jonsson, Lance - former Army major and ex-equerry to Prince Andrew - is aiming to find the perfect woman.

Producers of the show found 20 girls they thought would be perfect for him, which he will whittle down to just one.
