The next phase of a controversial plan to widen Priory Crescent was delayed for further consideration last night.
Southend Council's environmental scrutiny committee deferred a proposal to use land between the current road in Priory Crescent and the railway line to ease traffic congestion for consideration by the full council.
Concerns raised at the meeting included disruption to wildlife and the possible disturbance of ancient relics at the site.
Roger Weaver, executive councillor for planning, transportation and engineering, said the improvement to Priory Crescent was included in the Borough Plan which had been the subject of a public inquiry.
Asked by Judith McMahon (Lab, Kursaal ward) if anything would be done to ensure the safe passage of any wildlife on the site, Mr Weaver said steps had been taken to establish no badgers or bats were present.
