Former Colchester United forward Steve McGavin has been appointed manager of Jewson League premier division strugglers Harwich and Parkeston.
McGavin, 33, who had two spells at Layer Road, approached Harwich at the end of last week, and after liaising with the chairman and vice-chairman, took up the hot-seat.
Harwich are currently rooted to the bottom-of-the-division after picking up just four points this season.
Ironically, the Shrimpers ended their 18-match run without a win last weekend after defeating Newmarket 2-0 at the Royal Oak.
McGavin was released by Conference side Dagenham and Redbridge two months ago and almost returned to the U's, until a training ground injury cut short his return.
The striker, who played a key part in Colchester's 1992 double-winning season, where they were crowned champions of the Conference and winners of the FA trophy final at Wembley, decided he was ready for the next step into management.
McGavin said: "I felt that my playing career at a professional and full-time level was coming to an end.
"I have been looking to move into the managerial side of the game for a long time. It is not a hasty decision and after meeting the chairman decided to take up the position at Harwich."
