The ten-strong squad from Benfleet's SEEVIC College are making strong strides once again in the National Volleyball Championships.

The Eastern Region finals at Chelmsford College drew a record number of nine entries from as far afield as Peterborough, Kings Lynn, Colchester and Luton.

SEEVIC were determined to retain the Eastern title they won last year, thereby booking their place at the national finals, where they were bronze medalists in 2001.

The tournament started for SEEVIC with three pool games against Peterborough, West Anglia and Moultin and none of the opposition trio were able to reach double figures as the Benfleet based boys presented a strong combination of attacking and defensive play, accompanied by strong runs of service from Coussins, Samuels and Staab.

In the semi-finals the SEEVIC team ended Colchester's tournament, beating them 25-7 with particularly strong hitting from captain Russ Dennis.

The final was a closely contested match.

Havering took the first set 25-19 and SEEVIC the second by the same score.

So it was all square going into the final set and both teams played good three touch volleyball.

Reeves contribution through the wing won him the "Player of the Day" and helped SEEVIC to a 15-9 victory.
