After five days without power, Bill Brown's famous hens have almost stopped laying.

Mr Brown, his wife Jo and their 1,000 hens, who lay odd-shaped eggs, are today facing their FIFTH day without electricity.

At 10am precisely on Sunday, like many others in the storm, the power went out at their Little Clacton farm in Thorpe Road.

Five days later, they are all still in the dark - and his hens have all but stopped laying.

Being all electric, Mr Brown, 70, and housebound Jo, 69, who is recovering from heart surgery, were unable to cook a hot meal until Tuesday night after buying camping stoves.

"We could not leave the hens so it was beans on toast until then," said Mr Brown. "We had not had a square meal since Sunday."

He described the ordeal as "a nightmare" and he was concerned about his wife's well-being.
