Ferry company DFDS Seaways has announced a substantial increase in passengers using its newest route from Harwich.

About 60,000 people used the Harwich to Cuxhaven, Germany, service in the third quarter of this year - an increase of 12 per cent on the same time last year.

Ebbe Pederson, managing director of DFDS Tor Line, said he thought the change of destination from Hamburg to Cuxhaven had boosted figures.

He said: "We changed the route in March and Cuxhaven is proving more popular for the passengers."

DFDS announced in July it was selling Admiral of Scandinavia, which operated the Cuxhaven route.

From mid-November, DFDS' freight arm, Tor Line, will continue sailings until a replacement for Admiral of Scandinavia is available.

DFDS Seaways is currently negotiating for its new ship, which is hoped will start carrying passengers in April.
